Have you heard, NU is in the process of building out a new digital design lab. Set to open April of 2009, the Digital Design Lab will feature: 24” inch iMac Intel Core Duo 2.8GHz computers, high end video recording devices, a green screen, and lighting and sound equipment which will enable students to explore new elements in film, video game development, and the visual arts.

Now... when you say "video game development"... Do we have - XBOX 360 devkits - PS3 devkits - Wii devkits - PSP devkits - DS devkits The reason I ask is because most of the development for these systems uses some specialized hardware and software. I'd probably have all of them myself, except I can't find anybody to sell them to me. There is a spy on the moon who is spying on the earth Taking note of everything we do I heard him say he's afraid, he says he's pretty glad That we're down here and he's up on the moon.

Good question, I'll have John Kilbourn log in and answer that. Anyone who's taken XNA with Aaron Reed may know a little more than me.

I've been digging. and digging. and digging. The only one I actually found was... http://www.warioworld.com/
http://nslog.com/2004/12/08/nintendo_ds_sdk
XBOX didn't want me having a devkit. Tried the XBOX hotline, as well as a couple MSFT numbers. Sony... nobody had an answer for the question, and I got transfered 50 times. 6506558000 is the number for SCEA main reception. After dealing with their phone loop, I don't think I'll be buying sony products again any time soon. Greetings, This is John Kilbourn, director of Digital Design at NU. The media lab will have Maya, Photoshop and related video editing software for each machine. These are the major tools used by any studio creating assets for digital media production, including video games. Development kits are used to integrate the aforementioned assets into the game engine. Each console requires the purchase of a proprietary development kit. The prices can range from a few hundred dollars to many tens of thousands of dollars. Take a look at the number of games available for each console and you can deduce the cost and availability of respective development kits. Most console producers will not engage in development kit purchase discussions unless one is representing a publisher or development studio and one is prepared to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on multiple units. It is far more practical for the school to provide access and training on asset production tools instead of development kits for consoles. Hand held devices, including I phones, present a different scenario. The cost for development kits and solutions for these applications is significantly lower and we are looking at incorporating this into the media lab. Keep watching the forums for more updates and feel free to ask me any game or media related questions. Cheers, John

You can get the XNA creators club license(trial) for free if you are a student on the MSDNAA Or Dreamspark (I think?) Or just buy one for $99 http://creators.xna.com/en-US/
